Last Defense at Troubled Reactors: 50 Japanese Workers ↘

I’m in awe of these people. If I was in any of their shoes, I don’t think I would be able to make myself stay. And, even if I did stay, I probably wouldn’t be able to function and continue to fight the good fight against nuclear meltdown.

I hope I would. But I also hope I would never be put in such a situation.

Lovely day for a late winter walk!

College courses based around Star Trek aren’t anything new, but this one at Syracuse University, titled “Star Trek and the Information Age,” has a cool poster.  :-)
Oh, and I’m sure the professor knows to count the approximately 23 hours worth of Trek motion pictures, as well.

I seriously love my alma mater.

The most isolated man on the planet

scribnerbooks:

That’s a satellite photo of 31 square miles of the Brazilian Amazon reserved for one man. No trespassing, no development. He’s the last of his tribe, and he has never had contact with the outside world. Ever.

Journalist Monte Reel covers the story in his book “Last of the Tribe,” but you can also read his great article here.

One of the best stories of the year, in our humble opinion.

(Thanks to Longreads for highlighting it!)

Wow. Can you even begin to imagine what it’s like for this man? To be the last of his tribe, his people, and to know it?

It may have taken thousands of years of unnecessarily violent massacres and genocides to reach Brazil’s approach to this man and the few remaining “uncontacted” tribes but, at least, change is happening.

If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that… I believe in what I do, and I’ll say it.
John Lennon

How incredible are these promo posters for “Black Swan?” So much more interesting and, I would even venture to say, appropriate than the official American movie poster. These images look like they were plucked from the annals of a ballet company, like they should be promoting a ballet production but ramped up to the nth degree. There’s so much drama, suspense and tension. The simple color palette and the vivid illustration are absolutely inspirational.

To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master.

Penguin Classics is set to publish a set of six new editions of F Scott Fitzgerald’s work later this year, designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith…
This is a particularly handsome series, complete with gold, silver and bronze-foiled Jazz Age patterns, and each book feels great in the hand. Bickford-Smith has also incorporated a detachable bookmark into each edition, on the inside-back of the dust jacket (above). The typeface used throughout is Penumbra Serif.

Striking. Beautifully and glamorously stark. These covers just work on so many levels. They will stand out on the store bookshelves while evoking the undercurrent of sadness amid the opulent that marks F. Scott Fitzgerald’s writing.
